On August 24, the Indiana University Health North Hospital in Carmel broken ground on a new cancer center.

The cancer center, named Joe & Shelly Schwarz, is designed to bring all cancer services under one roof, including radiation oncology, hematology-oncology, pharmacy, lab and patient navigation.

“Through this investment, IU Health will be able to improve access to care for patients, and bring treatment closer to home for those living on the north side of Indianapolis and beyond,” according to the health system.

Located on a portion of the south parking lots, the cancer center will be connected to the main hospital building.

The project will cost $55 million and is expected to be completed by 2020.

Shelly Schwarz, along with her late husband, Joe Schwarz, committed $10 million to the cancer center, the largest single gift to IU Health from a living donor to date. Joe Schwarz died in March 2018 after his second battle with cancer. Shelly made the gift to honor Joe’s grateful spirit and recognize the care he received as an IU Health patient.
