This video dates back to 1957 and the beginnings of the US Interstate Highway system. There are plenty of “period” construction work scenes, and while the acting in this commercial advocacy film is somewhat stilted, the storylines resonate in 2018/19.

You’ll some differences in safety approaches and practices. (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) didn’t exist then.) The issues of community division, “NIMBY” (Not in My Backyard) and expropriation/eminent domain remain relevant today as they did then for infrastructure projects. And we can see (with good reason) why the relevant associations representing the construction industry were “all in” to fund this film.

Can you picture your own community in this story?
