The Lake County Council has approved a zoning change to allow construction of the estimated $200 million project in northwestern Indiana.
Chicago-based Invenergy has proposed the 200-megawatt solar project on 1,400 acres, about 20 miles south of Gary, the Miami Herald reports. The county planning commission will conduct a public hearing on zoning changes to permit large solar facilities.
The plant would produce enough electricity for more than 40,000 homes. Construction is set to begin in 2022, with the project coming online in 2024.
