Tim Barrick of RATIO Architects after receiving the highest SMPS recognition award at the association's national convention in Indianapolis

Tim Barrick, principal and executive vice-president of RATIO Architects, has received the highest recognition award from the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) at the association’s national Build Business convention in Indianapolis.

The Weld Coxe Marketing Achievement Award salutes a remarkable marketing or business development professional whose career achievements, leadership role, and lasting contributions to the industry are exemplary. Barrick is the 26th recipient of the award, named in memory of marketing pioneer, SMPS founder, and past honoree Weld Coxe.

“As I think about the previous recipients of this honor I think I stand among giants,” Barrick said in his acceptance speech. He recalled attending his first SMPS national convention in Dallas in 1988, where “I felt the power and energy of this organization” and the willingness of other members/leaders to share their insights and understanding.

“Take my advice,” he said. “Make the most of it, invest in it and it will be the best career move you ever make

The convention, which attracted several hundred members from chapters throughout the US and Canada, wraps up today (July 14).

Barrick grew up in Shelbyville and is a 35-year veteran of marketing professional services, the RATIO website says.

He began his career as an architectural draftsman for a small A/E firm as a means of paying tuition while studying Construction Engineering and Technology at Indiana Purdue University at Indianapolis. Soon after, he began doing business development and developing new client relationships as a way to secure his position with the firm. He then became director of business development for one of Indiana’s oldest and most prominent architectural firms. Barrick joined RATIO in 1987 and was named a principal in 1989.

Today, he collaborates with the leadership team to develop RATIO’s strategic plan and oversees firm finance in addition to merger and acquisition activities. He continues with his passion for business development and has played an integral role in RATIO’s successful market diversification and growth from a regional to national design firm.

Within SMPS, Barrick is a Fellow, past national president and Distinguished Life Member.
